TOBACCO FREE VILLAGE IN HYDERABAD
Pongalipaka village, with a population of 1,632 people, located about 48 km from Hyderabad, will be declared a tobacco-free village tomorrow on the special occasion of World No Tobacco Day, May 31. It’s a joint initiative of the Public Health Foundation of India (PHFI) and Nature.
The initiative was started in Aug, 2011. Under the program, all the shops selling tobacco in the village were asked to stop selling tobacco and tobacco related products. All the villagers took the initiative really seriously, and as a result the village has attained this very unique feat.
The same village, Pongalipaka, had bagged Nirmal Gram Puraskar in 2007 for maintaining good hygiene and sanitation.
No doubt, people of Pongalipaka village set high standards not only for themselves but also for all the villages in the country. CITYHYD congratulates all the people involved in this marvelous effort !!
